With each team card post included on this blog, and with the manager card for the Astros, I'd go through an exercise of coming up with five to seven players for each team to be included in a hypothetical eighth or update series. Presented below is my checklist based on those posts.
I had originally planned on this update series having 88 cards, but that wasn't enough to include everyone deserving of a card. Then I decided to have 132 cards in the set, the same as the classic Topps Traded boxed sets from the 1980s. But I couldn't get to a 132 cards without a lot of filler. So the final checklist is somewhere in the middle at 115 cards. The first 49 cards are brand new to the set with no counterpart in the original 1965 Topps set. Notable Topps contract holdouts Maury Wills and Chris Short are in the set, along with pre-rookie cards for Johnny Bench, Fergie Jenkins, Bobby Murcer and Jim Palmer.
The next 34 cards, or cards 50 through 83, are truly "traded" cards as these players appear in the original set on their former teams. Rocky Colavito gets a bonus card for my update set featuring him actually wearing an Indians uniform. And the final 31 cards (cards 84 to 114) are players receiving solo cards who had originally shared space on a Rookie Stars card in the original set. The set is topped off with a checklist.
Some of these cards exist in virtual or tangible form already, as displayed above, and I'd love to see an ambitious collector with some graphic design skills take on this full set project one day.
