After attending Villanova University, Bruce Howard pitched for six seasons in the majors, primarily with the White Sox. A reliable starter for the White Sox, Howard had his best two seasons with he went 9-8 with a 3.47 ERA in 1965, followed by 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA in 1966. In 120 career games, he compiled a record of 26-31 with a 3.18 ERA. His son David Howard was an infielder with the Royals and Cardinals between 1991 and 1999.
Marv Staehle struggled to repeat the minor league success he found in the major leagues. He led the South Atlantic League in batting in 1963 with his .337 average while playing for the Nashville Volunteers. He appeared in eight games or less with the White Sox each season between 1964 and 1966 before finally getting to stick around a bit and appearing in 32 games in 1967. Staehle appeared in a career high 104 games in 1970 with the Expos while platooning at second base with Gary Sutherland. In 185 career games, Staehle hit .207 with one home run and 33 RBIs.
Building the Set
July 20, 2020 from Scottsdale, AZ - Card #133
I continued to be fairly active with my eBay purchases in July, as we prepared for the abbreviated 60-game baseball season to start. Having been somewhat haphazard in my eBay hunts up until this point, I decided to focus and specifically try to complete the first series of our 1965 Topps set. I added 10 cards to our set from the first series (cards #1 through #88) from Scottsdale Baseball Cards, and the envelope with our new cards arrived on July 20th. As of this writing, we need 39 of the 88 cards from the first series so we're more than half-way there. The priciest card still needed is the A.L. Home Run Leaders card (#5) featuring Mickey Mantle. This White Sox Rookie Stars card entered our collection for $1.25.
The Card / White Sox Team Set
This is Staehle's rookie card, but Howard had already appeared on a Rookie Stars card the year before in the 1964 Topps set. Their minor league highlights and statistics are summarized on the back of the card. Staehle would on to appear on two more Rookie Stars cards in 1966 with Tommie Agee (#166) and in 1969 with Lou Piniella on a Pilots Rookie Stars card. Neither Staehle nor Piniella ever played with the Pilots. Staehle was sold by the Indians to the Pilots on April 1, 1968 and he'd spend the entire 1968 season and most of the 1969 season in the minors. The Pilots traded him to the Expos on September 13, 1969.
1965 Season - Howard
Howard started the season in the White Sox starting pitching rotation behind Gary Peters (#430), Joe Harlan and John Buzhardt (#458). He'd finished fifth on the staff in games started with 22, appearing in 30 games overall. His best outing of the year came on the penultimate day of the season when he pitched a complete game shutout against the Athletics, allowing only two hits and striking out seven.

1965 Season - Staehle
Staehle had seven pinch-hitting appearances for the White Sox in 1965 following a September call-up. He went 3 for 7 (.429) with a pair of RBIs. The bulk of his season was spent as the every day second baseman for the Indianapolis Indians. Staehle played in 137 games for the Indians, hitting .233.
