Bill Spanswick pitched for 10 seasons professionally, and for the entire 1964 season was a member of the Red Sox pitching staff.  Spanswick worked his way up gradually through the Red Sox system before winning a job out of spring training and making the club's opening day roster in 1964.  He was used as a swingman to start the season, and then used exclusively out of the bullpen beginning in mid-June.  Spanswick appeared in 29 total games for the eighth place Red Sox, going 2-3 with a 6.89 ERA over 65 1/3 innings pitched.  He earned his first of two wins on May 8th, pitching six solid innings against the Senators, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight.  Spanswick began the 1965 season in the minors, and he'd remain there for the remainder of his career.  He retired following the 1967 season.

1964 Topps #287
Building the Set

December 4, 2021 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards, Babylon, NY) - Card #424
You'll be seeing this particular passage on my 1965 Topps blog for quite some time as we added a whopping 97 cards to our set during the December Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show.  If I'm ambitious and compose posts for five cards a week, I should be completely caught up by the end of May.  If I'm not as ambitious, I might still be going through this stack by the time we hit July.  Either way, I'll enjoy the process and I'm looking forward to taking my time.  I've posted a complete summary of this fantastic show over at The Phillies Room.

After securing Doug's Jim Thome autograph, I returned to Uncle Dick's and their neon green shirts, pulled up a chair, and settled in.  Over the course of 45 minutes or so, I found 79 cards needed for our set, including this Spanswick card which was a little less than $2 after the dealer discount.  I was surrounded by six or seven other seated collectors, all who looked similar to me, with a touch of gray, focused on their individual quests.  I wiped out Uncle Dick's two 1965 Topps commons binders, paid for my haul and then retreated to a table with Doug to update our checklist.

The Card / Red Sox Team Set
Spanswick parlayed his short time in the majors into two Topps flagship appearances - this card and a card in the 1964 Topps set shared with Tony Conigliaro (#55).  He signed reprints of this card for inclusion in the 2014 Topps Heritage Real One Autographs insert set.

1965 Season
Spanswick spent the entire season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Red Sox top farm team in the International League.  Injuries limited him to 16 games (14 starts) and 84 innings, and he earned a record of 6-3 with a 3.43 ERA.
