Catcher Don Pavletich appeared in a single game with the Reds in 1957, another single game with the team in 1959 and then went two full seasons in the minors before returning for 34 games in 1962.  He then spent seven seasons with Cincinnati as the back-up to All-Star Johnny Edwards (#418) and then future Hall of Famer Johnny Bench.  Pavletich's best season came in 1966 when he appeared in a career-high 83 games, making 46 starts behind the plate, including on opening day.  He batted .294 that season, with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs, both career bests.  He was dealt to the White Sox before the 1969 season, and he'd spend the year in Chicago as the back-up for Ed Hermann.  Pavletich retired following two seasons in Boston, in which he appeared in only 46 games.  He had been dealt to the Brewers following the 1971 season, but the team released him at the end of spring training in 1972.  In 536 career games, Pavletich batted .254 with 46 home runs and 193 RBIs.

Building the Set

December 4, 2021 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards, Babylon, NY) -
Card #452
You'll be seeing this particular passage on my 1965 Topps blog for quite some time as we added a whopping 97 cards to our set during the December Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show.  If I'm ambitious and compose posts for five cards a week, I should be completely caught up by the end of May.  If I'm not as ambitious, I might still be going through this stack by the time we hit July.  Either way, I'll enjoy the process and I'm looking forward to taking my time.  I've posted a complete summary of this fantastic show over at The Phillies Room.

After securing Doug's Jim Thome autograph, I returned to Uncle Dick's and their neon green shirts, pulled up a chair, and settled in.  Over the course of 45 minutes or so, I found 79 cards needed for our set, including this Pavletich card which was a little less than $4 after the dealer discount.  I was surrounded by six or seven other seated collectors, all who looked similar to me, with a touch of gray, focused on their individual quests.  I wiped out Uncle Dick's two 1965 Topps commons binders, paid for my haul and then retreated to a table with Doug to update our checklist.

The Card / Reds Team Set
This is the first (and only?) uncorrected positional error I've come across in the set, as Topps lists Pavletich as a pitcher.  He wore uniform #8 during his entire career with the Reds, with Danny Breeden taking the number in 1969.  Joe Morgan (#16) wore the number between 1972 and 1979, with the Reds retiring it in Morgan's honor in 1998.  The back of the card highlights the three home runs hit by Pavletich in three consecutive days in 1964.  All three were against the Phillies between July 18th and July 20th, with pitchers Dallas Green (#203), Ed Roebuck (#52) and Ray Culp (#505) the victims.

1965 Season
Pavletich was a solid back-up for Edwards, playing in 68 games overall and batting .319 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs.  Edwards made 98 starts, with Pavletich receiving 48 and third-string catcher Jimmie Coker (#192) making the remaining 16 starts.  Pavletich hit an 11th inning, two-run home run June 25th in Milwaukee to send the Reds to a 3-1 victory.
