Pitching mostly for the Braves, Ron Piche (pronounced pee-SHAY) appeared in six different seasons and in 134 games compiled a lifetime record of 10-16 with a 4.19 ERA and 12 saves.  Although he was used primarily as a reliever, he did make 10 starts and pitched 3 complete games in those starts.  In the minor leagues, Piche made 500 appearances and had an impressive record of 124-61.  After retiring as an active player, Piche was a long-time minor league coach in the Expos' organization and served as Montreal's bullpen coach in 1976.  He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.

Building the Set
August 21, 2020 from Charleston, SC - Card #166
In my largest (by volume) purchase to date, I spent an enjoyable hour or so in mid-August browsing the eBay store of seller mantlerulz and clicking Add to Cart on 30 different cards.  We had previously added 29 cards to our set back in February from the Philly Show.  The 30 cards, all commons, cost me $52 total (before shipping and taxes) with the cards ranging in prices from $1 to $6.  I love this haul and I found the seller's store by accident when I was browsing eBay in an attempt to add a few more cheap cards from the set's first series.  With this purchase, we've now passed the quarter mark for completion of the set.  We still have a long way to go, and quite a few pricey cards to add, but any day I can add 30 commons in excellent shape and at very low prices is a great day.  This Piche card was $1.50.

The Card / Angels Team Set
No offense to Piche here, but his presence in the set is most likely due to Topps needing to fill out its checklist.  Piche spent the entire 1964 season in the minor leagues and he would have been long-gone from the Angels big league roster by the time this card came out.  He's clearly wearing a Braves jersey here, and this is his fourth and final appearance in a Topps flagship set.

Flipping to the back, his 14-3 record (.824 winning percentage) is referenced as he had a successful season pitching for the Triple-A Toronto Maple Leafs.  His minor league success is mentioned, along with his acquisition by the Angels from the Braves on October 14, 1964 for Dan Osinski (#223).  Phil Roof (#537) went with Piche from the Braves to the Angels.  I don't have a large enough sample size yet of cards from these higher series, but it seems to me there's a new cartoonist in charge of the backs of these cards.  The last few cartoons for this card and the Gary Geiger (#452) card have used a different style than what I'm used to seeing in the earlier series.

1965 Season
Piche appeared in 14 games for the Angels in April, May and early June before being traded to the Twins' organization for Frank Kostro (#459).  With the Angels, he went 0-3 with a 6.86 ERA over 19 2/3 innings pitched.  With both the top farm teams of the Angels and Twins, he appeared in 20 games and went 3-4 over 53 innings pitched.
