Building the Set

December 25, 2020 from Marco Island, FL - Card #182
This is one of 32 cards (mostly commons) I received from Jenna and our sons on Christmas morning, as I was asked to do some surrogate shopping on their behalf and I gladly obliged.  Hunting specifically for first series cards, this is one of 5 cards I added from eBay seller Super Bowl Auctions from Marco Island, Florida.  This Blasingame card was $2, and he's apparently no relation to Don Blasingame (#21), whose card was also added on Christmas morning.

The Card / Braves Team Set
This is Blasingame's rookie card and he'd go on to appear in six more Topps flagship sets.  As mentioned on the back of the card, he made his big league debut at 19 years old on September 17, 1963.  Also mentioned is his first (of only two) major league shutouts, thrown on September 3, 1964 against the Cardinals.  Blasingame allowed seven hits and struck out seven Cardinals in that game, including Lou Brock (#540), Bill White (#190) twice and Ken Boyer (#100).

1965 Season
As mentioned above, this was probably Blasingame's best year as he went 16-10 over 38 games (36 starts) with a 3.77 ERA.  He was the number two pitcher in a Braves rotation consisting of Tony Cloninger (#520) at the top and with Ken Johnson (#359) and Denny Lemaster (#441) rounding things out.  Blasingame's 224 2/3 innings pitched were second on the staff behind Cloninger's 279.

1969 Topps #308
