On September 12, 1959, Bob Saverine entered the Orioles game against the White Sox as pinch-runner for shortstop Billy Klaus in the eighth inning. His one inning appearance, in which he came around to score on a Bob Nieman RBI single, made him the youngest player in the majors that season at 18 years, 3 months old. Saverine would play two more full years in the minors before getting another brief call-up in 1962, and he'd become somewhat of a regular with the Orioles in 1963. He appeared in 115 games that season, playing middle infield and both corner outfield positions. Saverine would appear in 46 games with the Orioles in 1964 before spending the entire 1965 season back in the minors. In November 1965, he was left unprotected and selected by the Senators in the annual rule 5 draft.
Saverine enjoyed two successful seasons with the Senators, starting 150 games in 1966 and 1967, and receiving playing time at five different positions. He played one final season with the Senators' top farm team in Buffalo in 1968 before ending his baseball career. In 379 games, Saverine batted .239 with 206 hits.

September 7, 2021 from Twitter trade with Eric M. - Card #351
On the night of September 3rd, and while organizing a stack of extra cards on my computer desk, I Tweeted out a photo of the John Briggs (#163) card from this set. I had somehow added a double of the card and I was curious if baseball card Twitter would be interested in a one-card trade, exchanging the Briggs card for another card I needed for our set. Fellow Phillies fan and Von Hayes super collector Eric M. responded, and we quickly worked out a trade. Eric had two cards we needed for our set, this Saverine card and the Floyd Robinson (#345) card. I mailed out the Briggs card along with the Ken Reynolds Rookie Stars card from the 1971 Topps set, as Eric needed it for his Phillies collection. A few days later, the two 1965 Topps cards arrived from Eric along with a surprise autographed Stan Lopata card from the 1975 TCMA 1950 Whiz Kids set. I may need to work out a few more Twitter trades along the way!
The Card / Orioles Team Set
The lone palm tree in the background makes it obvious this photo was taken at the Orioles spring training home at the time in Miami. The back of the card highlights his high school basketball stardom. The write-up also mentions Saverine's all-star status in 1960, listing out some of his teammates and current major leaguers - Bob Chance (#224), Pete Ward (#215) and Boog Powell (#560).
1965 Season
Saverine spent the entire season playing for the Rochester Red Wings, the Orioles top minor league team in the International League. He appeared in 135 games for the Red Wings, playing regularly at shortstop (72 games), second base (39 games) or in the outfield (28 games), batting .267 with 17 doubles. According to his SABR biography, Saverine learned part-way through the season that he would be heading to the Astros as the player to be named later in the deal that had sent pitcher Don Larsen (#389) from Houston to the Orioles on April 24th. Saverine was allowed to play out the rest of the season on the Rochester squad, but his pending trade helps explain why he was never recalled by the Orioles. He was only property of the Houston organization for a short time as the Senators claimed him as mentioned above.
