The well-traveled Bob Shaw pitched for seven different big league teams over his 11-year career, helping the White Sox reach the World Series in 1959 and making the N.L. All-Star team in 1962 with the Braves.  Shaw was 18-6 with the White Sox in 1959, forming a formidable pitching duo with Early Wynn atop the team's starting rotation.  Shaw pitched to a 2.69 ERA that season, finishing third in the league.  The White Sox would lose the Series, but Shaw won his battle against Sandy Koufax (#300) and the Dodgers in Game 5, pitching a 1-0 shutout.  He'd next find success with the Braves in 1962, winning 15 games and reaching the 200-inning plateau for the third time in his career.  Converted for a time to a closer, he reached double digits in saves with 13 in 1963 and 11 in 1964.  Back as a starter, Shaw was a 16-game winner with the Giants in 1965.  He retired following the 1967 season with a career record of 108-98 and a 3.52 ERA over 430 games pitched.

Shaw holds the curious record of most balks in a game by a pitcher with five on May 4, 1963.  He served as the pitching coach for the Brewers for all the 1972 season and the first half of the 1973 season.

Building the Set
November 6, 2021 from Cooperstown, NY (Willis Monie Books) - Card #384
Needing a quick vacation and wanting to take our sons to Cooperstown for the first time, we took advantage of the annual NJEA Teacher Convention in which public schools are closed for a few days in early November.  We loaded our car on Thursday morning with a loose plan of spending two days in Cooperstown and the surrounding area, shopping in the village, soaking in the Hall of Fame exhibits and eating a few good dinners.  The 4 1/2 hour drive to Otsego County was scenic and enjoyable.  Most of the day Friday was spent in the Hall of Fame and Saturday was dedicated largely to shopping in the many stores, mostly baseball related, located in the blocks surrounding the Hall.

Having spent Saturday morning in the Hall and then having lunch again at Doubleday Cafe, we walked down Main Street one more time to see if there were any stores we had missed.  There was an old book store towards the end of Main Street and with some time to kill, I decided to have a look around.  Willis Monie Books has to be seen to be believed.  Thousands upon thousands of books dating back a few centuries to recent releases are haphazardly (but lovingly) stacked and piled and balanced among the multiple rows, aisles and nooks of this store.  In the foyer, outside the front door, I found an out of service rotating display case with old baseball cards in it and on top of that case were more stacks of books and a few 800-count boxes of loosely organized cards from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.  I probably spent well over a half hour pouring through the boxes, coming away with nine cards total from 1959, 1965 and 1969 and spending a grand total of $20.  This Shaw card was one of five cards added to our 1965 set, and it set me back $2.

The Card / Giants Team Set
This is the first Topps card to feature Shaw actually wearing a Giants uniform.  His 1964 Topps card had him on the Giants, but wearing a Braves jersey.  Shaw was a successful swingman throughout his career as noted on the back of the card.  Of his 430 career appearances, 52% were starts (223) and 48% were relief appearances (207).  Shaw, at card #57, is one of 72 players featured within the 1965 Topps Embossed insert set and one of four Giants in the set.

1965 Season
Shaw began the season in the Giants' bullpen but eventually moved into their starting rotation, making his first start on May 16th.  He ended up finishing second on the team in wins (16) behind Juan Marichal's (#50) 22.  Overall, Shaw appeared in 42 games, making 33 starts, and was 16-9 with a 2.64 ERA over 235 innings pitched.  That mark again was second only to Marichal who threw 295 1/3 innings.
