A reliever for most of his career, Hank Fischer found some success in the mid-1960s as a swing-man for the Braves, appearing in 142 games overall for the team while making 61 starts. He appeared in a career-high 37 games for the Braves in 1964 with only Denny Lemaster (#441) and Tony Cloninger (#520) making more starts for the fifth place club. Fischer went 11-10 with a 4.01 ERA that season, and although he was second in the league with five shutouts, he found himself in a similar role the following year. After another solid season in 1965, Fischer was on the move frequently in 1966. He began the season with the Braves, was dealt to the Reds in June for Joey Jay (#174) and then was swapped again to the Red Sox in August. He'd appear in nine final games with the Red Sox in 1967 losing the bulk of the season to the disabled list, and then finishing the year playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston's top farm team. The Red Sox released Fischer following the season, ending his playing days.
Over 168 career big league games, Fischer was 30-39 with a 4.23 ERA over 546 2/3 innings pitched.
Building the Set
December 4, 2021 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards, Babylon, NY) - Card #392
You'll be seeing this particular passage on my 1965 Topps blog for quite some time as we added a whopping 97 cards to our set during the December Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show. If I'm ambitious and compose posts for five cards a week, I should be completely caught up by the end of May. If I'm not as ambitious, I might still be going through this stack by the time we hit July. Either way, I'll enjoy the process and I'm looking forward to taking my time. I've posted a complete summary of this fantastic show over at The Phillies Room.
The Card / Braves Team Set
This is one of five appearances in Topps flagship set for Fischer, and the only one on which he's smiling. The cartoon on the back highlights Fischer's success as a college basketball player at Seton Hall. Also mentioned are his 11 wins and five shutouts in 1964.
1965 Season
Fischer bounced back and forth between the bullpen and the starting pitching rotation, appearing in 31 games overall and making 19 starts. It seems as if whenever the Braves needed a fifth starter, the ball would go to either Fischer or Bob Sadowski (#156). Fischer was 8-9 with a 3.89 ERA overall, striking out 79 over 122 2/3 innings.

Looking to kill some time while we were waiting for our number to be called for Doug's autograph from Jim Thome, I found a bargain bin of 1965 Topps cards at Uncle Dick's and I texted Doug that I'd be standing at the table where the dealers were wearing neon green shirts. This Fischer card was one of 15 from that first batch of purchases, totaling $40, and it was a little less than $3 after the dealer discount. After getting the Thome autograph, and grabbing a slice of pizza from the "food court" upstairs, I'd settle in at Uncle Dick's for my second and biggest haul of the show.
