Tommie Sisk found early success as a reliever with the Pirates, appearing in 57 games during his rookie season of 1963 and pitching to a 2.92 ERA over 108 innings pitched. He struggled over the next few seasons to regain that form, and was ultimately moved to the starting pitching rotation. Sisk enjoyed a career year in 1967, going 13-13 with a 3.34 ERA and accumulated 11 complete games with two shutouts. He struck out a career high 85 batters over 207 2/3 innings. He was used again in 1968 as a swing-man for the Pirates, making 11 starts and appearing in 33 games overall and pitching to a 3.28 ERA. In March 1969, Sisk was dealt with Chris Cannizzaro (#61) to the expansion Padres for Ron Davis and Bobby Klaus (#227). One of the most frequently used pitchers by the Padres in their inaugural year, Sisk appeared in 53 games and went 2-13 with a 4.78 ERA. Sisk appeared in 17 games for the White Sox in 1970 before his big league career came to an end. In 316 games, Sisk was 40-49 with a 3.92 ERA, 10 saves and 441 strikeouts over 928 1/3 innings pitched.

September 29, 2021 from Los Angeles, CA - Card #364
With everyone back in school, the Phillies' playoff hopes growing dimmer, my workload picking up at my chosen profession and a dwindling pile of purchased 1965 Topps cards to compose posts for, I decided I was in need of a nice stack of commons (and some semi-stars) for our set. Over the course of an enjoyable evening, mostly while sitting in my car in a parking lot next to where Doug's baseball team was practicing, I bid on about 45 cards up for auction from Greg Morris Cards, located in Los Angeles. When the dust settled and I checked my phone the next morning, I had won 19 cards, ranging in price from $1.75 to $11 and averaging around $4 per card. This Sisk card was mine with a winning bid of $2.55. Doug's free time is spent practicing baseball, Ben has found he thoroughly enjoys his school's cross country team, and I have a stack of 1965 Topps cards to study and write about whenever I need a break from adulting. All is well.
The Card / Pirates Team Set
I thought there was an uncorrected error on the back of this card, as Sisk made 41 relief appearances for the Pirates in 1964, and not 47. But Topps is totaling his overall relief appearances with both the Pirates and the Triple-A Columbus Jets, and Sisk's total games relieved over both levels is in fact 47. Bob Bailey (#412) gets name-checked in the cartoon, as Bailey played his high school ball at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, while Sisk played at nearby Polytechnic High School, also in Long Beach.
1965 Season
Sisk had a decent season for the Pirates, as the club finished in third place in the National League with a 90-72-1 record. He and Joe Gibbon (#54) traded fifth starter duties throughout the season, with Sisk receiving 12 starts. He made 38 appearances overall and was 7-3 with 3.40 ERA over 111 1/3 innings pitched. He threw a complete game shutout against the Mets on September 20th, with the Mets managing only two hits off Sisk.
