Julio Navarro played in parts of six big league seasons, with only one of his 130 total appearances coming in a starting role.  He enjoyed his best season in 1963, leading the Angels with 12 saves and sharing the team's overall closing duties with Art Fowler.  Navarro went 4-5 that season with a 2.89 ERA over 57 games and 90 1/3 innings pitched.  Dealt to the Tigers on April 28, 1964 for outfielder Willie Smith (#85), Navarro appeared in 26 games with Detroit but spent part of the season with Triple-A Syracuse.  He'd appear in only 16 games over the next two seasons with the Tigers and was dealt to the Red Sox in June 1966.  Navarro pitched between 1967 and 1969 exclusively in the minor leagues in the Braves organization, and he finally made a return to the majors with the Braves in July 1970.  After appearing in 17 games with the Braves that year, his big league career was over.  Navarro would pitch for four more seasons in the Yankees organization and in Mexico before retiring.

He earned a career record of 7-9 with a 3.65 ERA and 17 saves.  Navarro's son Jaime had a successful 12-year major league career with the Brewers, Cubs, White Sox and Indians between 1989 and 2000.

Building the Set

September 29, 2021 from Los Angeles, CA - Card #365
With everyone back in school, the Phillies' playoff hopes growing dimmer, my workload picking up at my chosen profession and a dwindling pile of purchased 1965 Topps cards to compose posts for, I decided I was in need of a nice stack of commons (and some semi-stars) for our set.  Over the course of an enjoyable evening, mostly while sitting in my car in a parking lot next to where Doug's baseball team was practicing, I bid on about 45 cards up for auction from Greg Morris Cards, located in Los Angeles.  When the dust settled and I checked my phone the next morning, I had won 19 cards, ranging in price from $1.75 to $11 and averaging around $4 per card.  This Navarro card was mine with a winning bid of $3.25.  Doug's free time is spent practicing baseball, Ben has found he thoroughly enjoys his school's cross country team, and I have a stack of 1965 Topps cards to study and write about whenever I need a break from adulting.  All is well.

The Card / Tigers Team Set
Navarro is wearing an Angels uniform here, and at least Topps went with a hatless photo in 1965.  For his 1964 Topps card, Navarro is given a team designation of Tigers but he's wearing an Angels hat.  On the back of the card, Topps points out his nickname of "Whiplash" which was given to him as a result of his sidearm fastball.  And I'm amazed when there are in-season notes on the back of these cards.  The final line on the back of the card indicates Navarro had been optioned back down to Syracuse earlier in the season, in May.

1965 Season
Navarro pitched sporadically throughout the season for the Tigers, ultimately appearing in 15 games and earning an 0-2 record with a 4.20 ERA over 30 innings pitched.  He appeared in 14 games for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, making 13 starts, and going 8-4 with an impressive 2.23 ERA over 105 innings pitched.  On the strength of his minor league numbers, Navarro was given his one and only big-league start on September 7th by Tigers' manager Chuck Dressen (#538).  He lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits against the Red Sox, in a game the Tigers ultimately lost, 5-3.
