A bonus baby originally signed by the Cardinals, Lindy McDaniel would go on to pitch for 21 big league seasons and appear in nearly a thousand games.  He enjoyed a career year in 1960 when he went 12-4 with a 2.09 ERA for the Cardinals, appearing in 65 games and notching a league leading 27 saves.  McDaniel was named to both All-Star games that season and finished third in the National League Cy Young voting behind Vern Law (#515) and Warren Spahn (#205).  McDaniel was fifth in the overall league MVP voting in 1960.  Dealt to the Cubs following the 1962 season, McDaniel continued his run of successful seasons as a reliever with a league leading 22 saves in 1963.  He appeared in at least 50 games in ten different seasons, including every season between 1959 and 1966.

McDaniel was dealt to the Yankees mid-way through the 1968 season, and he'd prove to be one of the team's best relievers between 1968 and 1973.  He was nearly unhittable in 1970, going 9-5 with a 2.01 ERA in 62 appearances and 111 2/3 innings pitched.  He saved a career high 29 games that season.  McDaniel finished his pitching career with two seasons for the Royals.  In total, he appeared in 987 games, and was 141-119 with 174 saves and a 3.45 ERA.  His career appearances are currently 17th on the all-time list, and his total of 577 games finished is 21st all-time.

Building the Set

December 4, 2021 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards, Babylon, NY) - Card #406
You'll be seeing this particular passage on my 1965 Topps blog for quite some time as we added a whopping 97 cards to our set during the December Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show.  If I'm ambitious and compose posts for five cards a week, I should be completely caught up by the end of May.  If I'm not as ambitious, I might still be going through this stack by the time we hit July.  Either way, I'll enjoy the process and I'm looking forward to taking my time.  I've posted a complete summary of this fantastic show over at The Phillies Room.

After securing Doug's Jim Thome autograph, I returned to Uncle Dick's and their neon green shirts, pulled up a chair, and settled in.  Over the course of 45 minutes or so, I found 79 cards needed for our set, including this McDaniel card which was a little less than $2 after the dealer discount.  I was surrounded by six or seven other seated collectors, all who looked similar to me, with a touch of gray, focused on their individual quests.  I wiped out Uncle Dick's two 1965 Topps commons binders, paid for my haul and then retreated to a table with Doug to update our checklist.

The Card / Cubs Team Set
McDaniel's uniform number 43 is peaking through on the back of his jersey.  The back of the card mentions his success as the league's top reliever in 1960 and 1963.  Also mentioned is his brother, Von McDaniel, who pitched in 19 games for the Cardinals in 1957 and 1958.  Von McDaniel has one mainstream Topps card in the 1958 set.

1965 Season
McDaniel appeared in a career-high 71 games, going 5-6 with a 2.59 ERA in 128 2/3 innings pitched.  All of his 71 appearances were in relief, and he served as an effective set-up man for closer Ted Abernathy (#332) who bested McDaniel with 84 appearances and 136 1/3 innings pitched.  Despite his success, McDaniel was on the move following the season as he was traded to the Giants in the deal that brought catcher Randy Hundley to the Cubs.
