#254 Roland Sheldon - New York Yankees

Roland Frank Sheldon
New York Yankees
Pitcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'4"  Weight:  185
Born:  December 17, 1936, Putnam, CT

Major League Teams:  New York Yankees 1961-1962, 1964-1965; Kansas City Athletics 1965-1966; Boston Red Sox 1966

A swing man between the starting pitching rotation and the bullpen for much of his career, Rollie Sheldon appeared in at least 34 games in four different seasons, making at least 16 starts in each of those years.  Sheldon pitched on Yankees teams that would advance to the World Series four seasons in a row between 1961 and 1964, but he wouldn't pitch in a World Series until Game 1 of the 1964 contest against the Cardinals.  In Game 1 and Game 7 of that series, he pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs.  Sheldon had his best season in 1965 after a trade sent him to the Athletics.  Inserted into their starting pitching rotation, he went 10-8 with a 3.95 ERA in 29 starts, throwing 193 innings and striking out 112.  He'd close out his big league career by splitting the 1966 season between the Athletics and Red Sox.

A trade in December 1966 sent him to the Reds organization, and he'd spend the next four seasons bouncing among seven different organizations, trying to make it back to the majors.  Sheldon spent time within the Reds, Angels, Pilots, Tigers, Expos, White Sox and Padres organizations before retiring following the 1970 season.  In 160 career big league games, including 101 starts, Sheldon was 38-36 with a 4.09 ERA.

Building the Set

December 4, 2021 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards, Babylon, NY) - Card #407
You'll be seeing this particular passage on my 1965 Topps blog for quite some time as we added a whopping 97 cards to our set during the December Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show.  If I'm ambitious and compose posts for five cards a week, I should be completely caught up by the end of May.  If I'm not as ambitious, I might still be going through this stack by the time we hit July.  Either way, I'll enjoy the process and I'm looking forward to taking my time.  I've posted a complete summary of this fantastic show over at The Phillies Room.

After securing Doug's Jim Thome autograph, I returned to Uncle Dick's and their neon green shirts, pulled up a chair, and settled in.  Over the course of 45 minutes or so, I found 79 cards needed for our set, including this Sheldon card which was a little less than $1.50 after the dealer discount.  I was surrounded by six or seven other seated collectors, all who looked similar to me, with a touch of gray, focused on their individual quests.  I wiped out Uncle Dick's two 1965 Topps commons binders, paid for my haul and then retreated to a table with Doug to update our checklist.

The Card / Yankees Team Set
This marks Sheldon's return to Topps set after a one year absence in 1964.  Sheldon had spent the entire 1963 season pitching in the minors, so his exclusion from the 1964 Topps set makes sense.  He started the 1964 season again with the Triple-A Richmond Virginians, but was recalled on June 12th when Bob Meyer (#219) was sold to the Angels.  As the back of the card mentioned, Sheldon pitched well for the Yankees down the stretch, going 5-2 in 19 appearances with a 3.61 ERA.

1965 Season
As mentioned above, this was Sheldon's best season in the majors.  After starting the season with the Yankees and appearing in three games, Sheldon was dealt to the Athletics on May 3rd with Johnny Blanchard (#388) for catcher Doc Edwards (#239).  He became a regular starter with the Athletics, and was arguably one of their best pitchers along with Fred Talbot (#58).  Sheldon went 10-8 in 32 games, pitching to a 3.95 ERA over 186 2/3 innings pitched for the 10th place club.
