Diego Segui was a durable right-handed pitcher who played in parts of 15 big league seasons, spending most of his career with the Athletics in three separate stints. Left unprotected by the Athletics, Segui was chosen as the 14th pick in the 1968 expansion draft by the Pilots, and he was the team's top reliever during their only year of existence. Segui appeared in a team-leading 66 games for the Pilots, going 12-6 with 12 saves, and his teammates named him the club's MVP following the season. He didn't move with the Pilots to Milwaukee however, as the team dealt him back to the Athletics in December 1969. Known for his forkball, Segui led the American League in ERA in 1970 with a 2.56 mark.
Segui would continue as an effective reliever in the early 1970s for the Cardinals and Red Sox, and in 1977 he joined the expansion Mariners, becoming the only player to appear for both Seattle Major League Baseball franchises. He struggled with the Mariners, going 0-7, and Segui's big league career ended. However, he continued to pitch in the Mexican league for another 10 seasons, throwing a no-hitter in 1978. And if that wasn't all enough, Segui managed to pitch in 15 seasons in the Venezuelan Winter League between 1962 and 1983. He was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2003. His son David played for 15 seasons in the majors (1990-2004) with seven different teams, most notably the Orioles.

June 19, 2021 from Moorestown Mall Baseball Card Show - Card #313
Following our youngest son Ben's flawless performance of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy at his piano recital, our family headed to the Moorestown Mall in New Jersey to browse a real live baseball card show. Traditionally, I only venture into malls for baseball card shows and I can't honestly remember the last time, pre-pandemic, I had stepped foot into a mall. The show was small, hosted by S&B Sports Promotions, with about a dozen tables and not much vintage to offer, but it was a sight for sore eyes. It took us only about 15 minutes to scout the whole place out and I was lucky enough to find a friendly dealer with 1960s and 1970s Topps cards in great shape, in order and (best of all) reasonably priced. I took my time going through his 1965 Topps commons, settling on 29 cards we needed and adding a card from the star pile to give us 30 new cards total. I spent an even $100 (after a generous dealer discount) and this Segui card was a little over $2.
The Card / Athletics Team Set
The yellow and green Athletics uniforms of the mid-1960s were glorious. The photo used here is from the same session that yielded the photo used for Segui's 1964 Topps card. Flipping to the back, Segui was tied for the team lead in complete games with Orlando Pena (#311), who also had five. Segui had the league lead for losses all to himself with 17. In the other pitching categories mentioned, Segui was second on the team in both strikeouts and innings pitched behind Pena. Segui, at card #24, is one of 72 players featured within the 1965 Topps Embossed insert set and one of three Athletics in the set. He's also in the harder to find 1965 Topps Transfers insert set.
1965 Season
In 40 games (25 starts), Segui went 5-15 with a 4.64 ERA over 163 innings pitched for the 10th place Athletics club. He'd move primarily to the bullpen beginning with the 1966 season.
