Marty Keough appeared in 11 big league seasons, most frequently used as a back-up outfielder, pinch-hitter or late-inning defensive replacement.  In the late 1950s he couldn't crack the Red Sox starting outfield, losing playing time to the likes of Ted Williams, Jim Piersall (#172) and Jackie Jensen.  Keough finally got the chance to be a regular after he was selected by the Senators in the 1960 expansion draft.  He appeared in a career-high 135 games for the Senators and was their opening day right fielder.  Keough batted .249 in 1961, reaching career highs in both home runs (seven) and RBIs (34).  Following that season, he was dealt to the Reds where he'd spend the next four seasons backing up Frank Robinson (#120) and Vada Pinson (#355).  After a final season in the majors in 1966 split between the Braves and the Cubs, Keough played all of 1967 in the minors and then played in Japan for a season with the Nankai Hawks.  With the Hawks in 1968, Keough batted .231 with 17 home runs as the club's regular first baseman.

Keough had 434 hits, 43 home runs and 176 RBIs over 841 big league games while batting .242.  Following his playing days, he served as a long-time scout for the Cardinals.  His younger brother Joe played six seasons in the majors with the Athletics, Royals and White Sox between 1968 and 1973.  His son Matt was an All-Star in 1978 with the Athletics and pitched in nine big league seasons.

Building the Set
June 5, 2021 from Tomball, TX - Card #307
To celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer, I took advantage of a 15% Memorial Day Weekend sale hosted by one of my favorite dealers, The Battersbox, from Tomball, Texas.  With the second series now complete, I spent an enjoyable hour or so over the long (and rainy) holiday weekend picking 20 commons from the third series to add to our set.  The package of cards arrived on June 5th and in total, the lot cost me a little more than $63.  This Keough card was a little less than $1.50 after applying the sales discount.

The Card / Reds Team Set
Keough would appear in one more Topps set after this, receiving a final card in the 1966 set.  The back of the card highlights his minor league exploits even though he had been playing in the majors since 1956.

1965 Season
In his final year with the Reds, Keough played in just 62 games and batted a career-worst .116 (5 for 43).  He made only three starts, unable to usurp Robinson, Pinson or Tommy Harper (#47) from their starting outfield spots.  With no place to play him, the Reds sold Keough to the Braves on April 4, 1966.

Phillies Connection
Before playing in Japan in 1968, Keough played a full season with the San Diego Padres in 1967, then the Phillies top farm team.  As a veteran on the team, Keough appeared in 128 games, batting .268 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs.  He was used as both a first baseman and an outfielder with the Padres, but his services weren't needed by the Phillies and a call-up never came.
