#219 Bob Meyer - Kansas City Athletics

Robert Bernard Meyer
Kansas City Athletics
Pitcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Left  Height:  6'2"  Weight:  185
Born:  August 4, 1939, Toledo, OH
Signed:  Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent before 1960 season
Major League Teams:  New York Yankees 1964; Los Angeles Angels 1964; Kansas City Athletics 1964; Seattle Pilots 1969; Milwaukee Brewers 1970

Bob Meyer appeared in a career-high 22 games in 1964, pitching for three different teams.  He made his big league debut on April 20, 1964, as the starting pitcher for the Yankees, and struck out Carl Yastrzemski (#385) for his first career strike out.  Meyer was sold to the Angels on June 12th and then sold again the Athletics on July 29th.  He'd spend the next four-plus seasons pitching in the Athletics' minor league system before getting a shot in the majors again with the expansion Pilots.  On August 29, 1969, Meyer and Pete Koegel were dealt to Seattle in exchange for pitcher Fred Talbot (#58).  Meyer appeared in six games for the Pilots with the highlight being a nine-inning performance against his original team, the Yankees, on September 1st and a complete game against his most recent former team, the Athletics.  The following season, Meyer pitched two innings in the first ever Brewers game on opening day 1970.  He'd appear in only nine more games for Milwaukee before his big league career ended.  Meyer went 2-12 in 38 games with a 4.38 ERA over 129 1/3 innings pitched.

Building the Set
June 19, 2021 from Moorestown Mall Baseball Card Show - Card #315
Following our youngest son Ben's flawless performance of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy at his piano recital, our family headed to the Moorestown Mall in New Jersey to browse a real live baseball card show.  Traditionally, I only venture into malls for baseball card shows and I can't honestly remember the last time, pre-pandemic, I had stepped foot into a mall.  The show was small, hosted by S&B Sports Promotions, with about a dozen tables and not much vintage to offer, but it was a sight for sore eyes.  It took us only about 15 minutes to scout the whole place out and I was lucky enough to find a friendly dealer with 1960s and 1970s Topps cards in great shape, in order and (best of all) reasonably priced.  I took my time going through his 1965 Topps commons, settling on 29 cards we needed and adding a card from the star pile to give us 30 new cards total.  I spent an even $100 (after a generous dealer discount) and this Meyer card was a little over $2.

The Card / Athletics Team Set
Meyer is wearing Yankee pinstripes here, and the photo likely came from the same session as the photo used on his 1964 Topps Rookie Stars card, which he shared with Pete Mikkelsen (#177).  The cartoon on the back is a little harsh, noting that Meyer led the Eastern League in walks.  He definitely had a control problem, as he tallied 80 career walks to his 92 career strikeouts.  The write-up on the back also details his journey during 1964 to three different teams.

1965 Season
Meyer spent the entire season pitching for the Double-A Birmingham Barons.  In 22 games (15 starts), he went 2-8 with 5.40 ERA, including two complete games.
