#565 Ernie Broglio - Chicago Cubs

Ernest Gilbert Broglio
Chicago Cubs
Pitcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'2"  Weight:  200
Born:  August 27, 1935, Berkeley, CA
Acquired:  Sent from Oakland (PCL) to the Cincinnati Reds in an unknown transaction, July 1954
Major League Teams:  St. Louis Cardinals 1959-1964; Chicago Cubs 1964-1966
Died:  July 16, 2019, San Jose, CA (age 83)

Ernie Broglio pitched in parts of eight big league seasons, enjoying a career year in 1960 when he was 21-9 with a 2.74 ERA for the Cardinals.  He finished third in the league's Cy Young voting that year, behind winner Vern Law (#515) and Warren Spahn (#205), and his ERA was second in the league behind the Giants' Mike McCormick (#343).  Broglio continued his success as a steady starting pitcher for the Cardinals, going 12-9 in 1962 with a 3.00 ERA, and compiling an 18-8 record in 1963 while throwing a career high 250 innings.  On June 15, 1964, Broglio was the centerpiece of a trade with the Cubs, sending future Hall of Famer Lou Brock (#540) to St. Louis.  At the time, it was considered a fantastic trade for the Cubs given Broglio's recent pitching success.  However, the pitcher soon developed elbow problems and he'd appear sparingly for the Cubs over parts of three seasons.  The Broglio-Brock trade is now widely regarded as one of the most lopsided deals in the history of the game.

Broglio attempted a comeback with the Reds' top farm team in Buffalo in 1967, but after not earning a promotion back to majors he called it a career.  In 259 career games pitched, Broglio was 77-74 with a 3.74 ERA and 849 strikeouts over 1,337 1/3 innings pitched.  With the Cubs, who traded away the future all-time stolen base leader to get him, Broglio pitched in just 59 games and was 7-19 with a 5.40 ERA.

Building the Set
March 6, 2022 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards - Babylon, NY) - Card #536
This is the 52nd of 102 cards acquired for our set from the Baseball Card Sports Memorabilia Show, affectionately known as The Philly Show, held in the basement of the Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia in early March.  We went nuts and left the show needing only 12 more cards to complete our 1965 Topps set, and I wrote about the show in detail over at The Phillies Room.  Having wandered aimlessly among the dealer tables looking for binders with vintage commons, I decided to check to see if Uncle Dick's had refreshed their inventory following the December show, during which I had wiped out both their 1965 Topps binders.  Much to my pleasant surprise, they had.

This Broglio card was $6 and was one of 49 commons and semi-stars purchased in my triumphant return to Uncle Dick's and his replenished neon green binders.

Depending on my ability to compose five posts a week on the cards acquired at this show, I should be completely caught up on this blog by mid-October.  It's entirely feasible we complete our 1965 Topps set by the end of 2022, although nine of the remaining 12 cards needed are fairly expensive.

The Card / Cubs Team Set
Broglio is hatless and wearing a Cardinals jersey here.  On the back of the card, Topps surprisingly highlights his 252 innings pitched while with the Stockton Ports in the California League in 1955.  They could have featured his 21 win season from 1960, or the fact he had been dealt to the Cubs in a fairly high profile trade the proceeding June.

1965 Season
Recovering from offseason elbow surgery, Broglio struggled mightily in his first full season with the Cubs, appearing in 26 games but making only six starts.  Overall he was 1-6 with a 6.93 ERA in 50 2/3 innings pitched.
